THE MIND IS A WONDERFUL PLACE

Julia Fedoruk

The mind is a wonderful place

when you close your eyes

if you don’t mind Madonna playing on loop

over the sound of

your worries

your insecurities

your impurities

the insults screaming by

even when your insulter is long

gone

The mind is a wonderful place

when you close your eyes

if you don’t mind thinking that people are better

than you

worse

than you

dying from famine and disease and wars

and all alone

while you sit on the sofa

with your eyes closed

The mind is a wonderful place

when you close your eyes

if you don’t mind getting tugged

every once in a while pulled to a greater

sorrow

than when they were open–

suddenly wondering why anyone really loves

you

in the first place

and if you will ever be enough

for the people who want you to succeed

or who want you to fail

or who line up behind you for lunch

or who sit next to you on the subway

and even for those who don’t notice you’re

there

even when you’re smiling

and waving

and running

in their direction

And maybe you don’t care

what your mind does when your eyes are

closed

because why close them anyways

when there’s a world out there

of charming people who tell witty jokes

and who hike to the tops of mountains

and love one another

and wear red lipstick–

maybe you’ll be successful

and get a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree

and meet the love of your life

and get a job and a house and children

and buy gifts and make gifts and throw parties

and go out to dinner and watch Hamilton

Yes

but right at the climax of the show comes

the star:

Global Pandemic
